Global SMBs TO Buy 1.1 Million Netbooks in 2009

San Jose, CA (PRWEB) May 7, 2009

The global economic crisis continues to impact SMBs worldwide. As SMBs rein in IT spending, the latest casualty is spending on replacing existing desktops and notebooks which accounts for the largest chunk of SMB IT related spend.

Techaisle is forecasting that SMBs worldwide will purchase 1.1 million Netbooks in 2009 jumping to to 3.5 million units in 2010. Overall, between 22% and 30% of SMBs state they are looking at Netbook purchases as they consider upgrading their core desktop and notebooks. A recent survey conducted by Techaisle suggests that while some SMBs are looking at Netbooks as possible replacement for desktops and notebooks, it is more likely that Netbooks will be used to augment rather than replace desktops and notebooks. Based on the survey, it is found that among SMBs two factors are contributing to the adoption of Netbooks:

    1.    Highly price sensitive SMBs are taking advantage of lower prices sacrificing computing power, screen size and gaming ability
    2.    A new segment of mobile device buyers are entering the market expanding the market for mobile computing devices.

Techaisle believing that while overall SMB notebook shipments are on track for a 5.4 percent growth rate, purchases of Netbooks will ultimately lead to lower average sell prices (ASPs) and exercising downward margin pressure on PC manufacturers.

“What Netbook adoption among SMBs has exposed is a latent need for small, lightweight devices. This demand is being filled by Netbooks and smartphones today. However, larger screen sizes are driving Netbook prices up and eroding the differences between Netbooks and notebooks, putting further expansion of the Netbook marketplace at somewhat of a risk. For the Netbook market to expand there needs to be a greater ‘value proposition differential’ – the subjective and objective differences in user experience between products,” says Abhijeet Rane, Partner and Senior Vice President, Techaisle.

  • Laplink Releases Low-priced PCmover for Netbooks

Laplink Releases Low-priced PCmover for Netbooks

Move to a New Netbook with PCmover Netbook Edition!

Bellevue, WA (PRWEB) November 2, 2009

Laplink Software announced that today it has released its first edition of PCmover specifically for Netbooks. It is now available for sale at online at Laplink’s website and soon from retail stores worldwide.

PCmover has long been the category leader and coming-one selling application for PC-to-PC migration with over 95% market share in U.S. retail. It is the only software that successfully moves files, settings and programs from computer to computer.

PCmover Netbook Edition provides the same time-tested functionality of Laplink’s PCmover Professional – optimized for moving into a Netbook but at a lower price.

“We recognized that PCmover is valuable software for setting up a Netbook, but we needed to deliver the functionality at a lower price,” said Randy Clark, Laplink’s COO. “Most Netbooks don’t have a CD drive so installing applications can be difficult. With PCmover, the applications desired are automatically copied over to the Netbook; no need to reinstall anything so no need for a CD drive. And that goes for files and folders as well.”

PCmover does not remove anything from the source PC and doesn’t overwrite anything on the Netbook.

“Simply install PCmover on both computers and follow the simple wizard,” continued Clark. “PCmover does all the work. Everything can be moved or only some programs and some files; users maintain total control over the process. When PCmover is done, the Netbook will have as much of the ‘personality’ and functionality of the source PC as the user desires. And, the Netbook retains all of its own pre-installed software while nothing is deleted from the source PC.”

Since many Netbooks do not have an optical drive to read CD’s or DVD’s, the physical boxed product of PCmover Netbook Edition will come with a Laplink USB flash drive to install PCmover alternatively of the usual CD-ROM). Also included will be a Laplink Ethernet cable for instant connectivity between the source PC and Netbook.

As with all the new Windows 7 versions of PCmover, the Netbook edition also includes the “Upgrade Assistant” feature for performing a “in-place” upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 for Netbook users.

“The various upgrade scenarios with Windows 7 will be very confusing and frustrating for consumers,” explained Thomas Koll, Laplink’s CEO, as he explained Laplink’s solution to the Windows 7 upgrade dilemma. “And businesses, especially smaller businesses, will also view this negatively. Our objective is to make upgrading to Windows 7 as easy and as simple as possible, so users can get all the benefits of this new operating system – which is quite good – without all the hassle.”

Other features of PCmover Netbook Edition include:

Application Selectivity: Choose which applications to be installed on the Netbook. Programs such as Microsoft Office, iTunes, photo editing software, games, instant messengers, financial and tax software, and many more are automatically transferred.
Folder & File Selectivity: Select which folders desired and deselect any file types not wanted to be transferred. Documents, spreadsheets, address books, photos, videos, Internet Favorites and shortcuts, and more are easily copied.     Multiple Transfer Options: Use a Laplink Ethernet or USB Transfer Cable, a network connection, or external drive.     Easy-To-Use Wizard: Click through a simple wizard to set up the migration.     ”Undo” Feature: Quickly reverse a move at any time with PCmover’s easy ‘undo’ feature.

    Prices and Availability
PCmover Netbook Edition SRP is $ 39.95 in retail stores and at http://www.laplink.com. Also, at Laplink’s website, electronic download is availalbe for the price of $ 29.95. PCmover Netbook Edition requires that the destination PC have an Atom-family processor. The source PC can be a Netbook, laptop, or desktop which is running Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7

Customers can purchase Laplink PCmover Netbook Edition now at Laplink’s website and soon from major software retailers worldwide in early November.

Global Small Businesses Show High Awareness and Purchase Intent for Netbooks

Small Business Netbook Adoption by Country

San Jose, CA (PRWEB) July 8, 2009

Small businesses across both emerging market and mature market countries continue to be an important driver of mobility products. Of late, Small businesses have begun adopting Netbooks. Techaisle’s new survey of Small Businesses in 10 countries (China, Brazil, Russia, US, Turkey, Australia, UK, India, Germany, Italy) shows that over 80 percent of Small Businesses are aware of Netbooks. While only 16 percent of Small Businesses currently own Netbooks, 52 percent of SBs that do not currently have Netbooks are likely to buy suggesting that a large percentage of Netbooks are likely to find their way into small businesses.

    Where are the Netbooks Buyers
The current uptake of Netbooks has been largely driven by very small businesses (

Netbook manufacturers would do well to boost sales and marketing efforts in countries like China and Turkey where SBs exhibit the greatest purchase intent. “There is significant opportunity in all the countries surveyed but China is a clear standout in terms of near term demand” says Anurag Agrawal, Techaisle. In addition to new buyers likely to enter the market, repeat purchase intentions among existing Netbook owners also runs high with over 65 percent of Netbook owning SBs stating they are likely to buy more Netbooks.

Current and future buyers are attracted to Netbooks for the low weight, price and greater battery life. Accessing company email is the most popular application used followed by browsing the web while traveling.

eRacks Offers Top Netbooks Preinstalled with Ubuntu and Fedora Linux

Orange, CA (PRWEB) January 8, 2009

eRacks Open Source Systems is now offering Asus, MSI, and Acer Netbooks preinstalled with Ubuntu or Fedora Linux. eRacks’ netbooks use Intel’s new Atom processor and are smaller, lighter, and more portable than laptops. Netbooks are also significantly less expensive but can easily handle the daily tasks like web-browsing, email, writing documents and spreadsheets. Other vendors sell netbooks with a simplified version of Linux, such as Linpus, but eRacks goes the extra step and configures the fully functional Linux operating system on its netbooks.

Linux is especially suited for netbooks, whereas Microsoft Vista is considered to be too resource-intensive. The increasing popularity of netbooks could be a significant step in the acceptance of open source software in the mainstream. Google’s Android, an open source mobile phone platform, has already been successfully ported to netbooks(1). Further advances could easily lead to netbooks being used a phone application development platform, as well as a PDA, e-book reader, and smartphone replacement. The latest trends of web-based applications and cloud computing also create an unique market niche for netbooks as portable thin clients.

With 10 years of experience in building computers preinstalled with open source operating systems, eRacks is prepared to meet the demands of these trends. “eRacks has a strong reputation in providing customized rackmount servers,” remarked Joseph Wolff, CEO of eRacks. “We welcome inquiries for production runs of specialized OSes including Google’s Android, on any of our netbooks.”

eRacks netbooks come with Ubuntu or Fedora Linux preinstalled and include Open Office, an office suite of software, containing document, spreadsheet, and presentation software, compatible with both standard and Microsoft formats. Webcams and card readers are also standard on eRacks netbooks. eRacks netbooks start at $ 299.

    About eRacks:
eRacks Open Source Systems is the premier provider of open source solutions and features its own rackmount servers, desktops and laptops, as well as a broad array of services including open source enterprise migration, security, and network architecture design. eRacks offers a wide select of operating systems and open source applications configured on its products, ensuring hardware compatibility and saving the customer valuable time in installation and configuration.

Netbooks Likely to be Popular Purchases This Season

    Low Cost Cells

Iowa City, IA (PRWEB) November 19, 2009

The netbook sector has been largely immune from the economic recession, and Iowa City, Iowa based Low Cost Cells believes many consumers will continue to purchase the small portable PCs this holiday season.

“A lot of business travelers are attracted to netbooks because they’re lightweight and are loaded with all the basics,” stated Nate Schmidt, president of Low Cost Cells. “Netbooks are also a good prime for those who want to buy starter computers for their children.”

Netbooks have accounted for 11.7 percent of overall roving PC sales in 2009, according to research firm Displaysearch. By the end of the year, ABI Research forecasts nearly 35 million netbooks will have shipped.
A recent survey of business technology professionals found that 36 percent are already using netbooks, and that statistic is expected to grow to 72 percent in the next two years.

“Netbooks are getting extremely democratic, and I would anticipate a lot of people will be interested in purchasing them as gifts this holiday season,” said Schmidt. “All of the netbooks we offer cost less than $ 200 when purchased with a plan from Verizon or AT&T.”

Among the netbooks on sale at Low Cost Cells are the HP Mini 1151 NR and the Gateway LT2016u, as well as the Lenovo S10 and the Acer Aspire One. All feature 10.1 inch screens and webcams that can be used for VOIP calls on such services as Skype, as well as the Windows operating system.

“For those who want the convenience of a smart phone and the features of a laptop, a netbook is the perfect choice,” said Schmidt.

In addition to offering netbooks, Low Cost Cells is an online distributor of cell phones for major cell phone carriers across the United States. The company’s goal is to provide the best value and service in the cell phone industry.

LogMeIn Delivers the Power of the Desktop to Netbooks

Woburn, MA (PRWEB) March 31, 2009

LogMeIn is now offering netbook manufacturers and wireless broadband service providers the ability to deliver the power of desktop computing on a netbook. The new LogMeIn Partner Program for Netbooks allows OEMs and wireless operators to pre-install LogMeIn products for remote access and support on the netbook, giving users simple, one-click access to their full-featured remote PC or Mac, and providing IT service providers with easy access to support netbook users.

Netbooks, small, Internet-connected portable computers, are one of the fastest-selling categories in technology(1). Wireless operators such as AT&T, Vodafone and T-Mobile are helping stimulate this growth by offering subsidized netbooks with mobile broadband service plans. While the ultra-portable devices are great for reading email or surfing the web, their limited processing power and memory means they aren’t typically capable of running all the applications an user might want, or storing significant amounts of data and documents.

LogMeIn Ignition on a netbook, coupled with the LogMeIn remote access service on any full-featured Mac or PC, gives netbook users the ability to connect to a remote computer in just a few seconds and use it as if they were sitting in front of it. This can significantly increase the value of the netbook by giving users access to all the applications and data on their home or work computer, as well as features for remote printing and sound, and file sharing, synch and transfer(2).

Under the LogMeIn Partner Program for Netbooks, organizations that manufacture or sell netbooks can offer LogMeIn Ignition pre-loaded on their netbooks, letting customers access their home or work computers quickly and easily. Manufacturers or service providers can also pre-load the LogMeIn Rescue “calling card,” making the netbook “Rescue Ready” for end-users technical support.

“LogMeIn is all about secure access and sponsoring for mobile professionals, making netbooks a natural platform for our applications,” said Richard Redding, Vice President and General Manager of Mobile at LogMeIn, Inc. “LogMeIn helps users maximize the possible of netbooks as personal productivity devices, so bundling our applications on to these devices could accelerate netbook adoption.”

About the LogMeIn Partner Program for Netbooks
By pre-bundling LogMeIn’s secure software, manufacturers and wireless broadband service providers can offer co-branded premium services that differentiate their netbook and mobile broadband offerings from competitors. The program includes:

”Remote Access Ready” with LogMeIn Ignition Pre-loaded – Gives netbook users the power of a desktop on a netbook. The LogMeIn Ignition client can be co-branded, and allows users to access and control their home or work computers running the LogMeIn remote access service.     Partner Web site – Partners have access to a dedicated, co-branded web site where customers can register for LogMeIn services, quickly learn how to use them and find additional resources about remote access.     Marketing and Promotional Support – The program offers joint marketing and promotional opportunities that help users adopt and utilize remote access services.     ”Rescue Ready” – OEMs and service providers can pre-bundle a branded LogMeIn Rescue “calling card” to provide users with premium remote support of their netbook. Netbooks Sales Set To Soar This Christmas

Netbook sales will soar in a credit crunch Christmas

London, UK (PRWEB) October 6, 2009

Statistics from the UK’s only dedicated netbook comparison website show that people are already starting to research low cost mini-laptops as potential gifts during the second credit crunch Christmas.

As the UK struggles through another credit crunch Christmas and shoppers spend more time hunting out great value gifts it seems no great coincidence that computer manufacturers are focusing their attention on recession priced netbooks.

The netbook, an ultra-cheap mini-laptop designed to be used mainly to access the internet over wireless connections, has been seized on by shoppers as a great value present for 2009. Netbooks currently occupy 4 of the top 5 positions in the Amazon bestseller list in the computer category and according to Gartner their sales make up 8% of total computer sales. Netbooks start from as little as £130 and can do many of the things full sized laptops or desktops can do which makes them very attractive for cash-strapped consumers.

Simon Driscoll, spokesman for netbook comparison site top-netbooks.co.uk says “We’re seeing huge investment by the computer industry in netbooks – and they just keep getting cheaper and cheaper. Netbooks didn’t even exist until 2007 and now we’re comparing prices on over 50 makes of mini-laptop from 12 manufacturers.

“Our website is seeing surges in traffic as the Christmas shopping season starts. People seem to be doing a lot of research, trying to find the perfect netbook for them or their gift recipient. We expect this to keep ramping up into the New Year. 2010 is going to be a massive year for accessing the internet on the go and many people will opt to do their mobile computing on a netbook.”

Recent rumours about an Apple netbook and news that Google plans to produce an operating system for netbooks has raised public awareness of netbooks as a whole and it seems the confidence of having these big names associated with this new technology has driven massive demand for these mini-laptops.

When asked what netbooks are selling particularly well in the run up to Christmas Mr Driscoll said “There’s currently a huge interest in the newer netbooks that have slightly larger screen and battery life of 6 hours plus. The Asus Eee 1005HA and the Acer Aspire One 751 are selling very well. At the other end of the spectrum, the first generation of netbooks like the Acer Aspire One AOA150, which are now very cheap, are generating a large amount of interest.”

Acer chairman J.T. Wang predicts that netbook sales will double next year to 50 million units meaning that 1 in 4 laptops purchased will be a netbook making it one of the few growth areas in the PC industry.
